Alpe Devero
Ski touring in Piedmont

Step into the quiet winter landscape of Alpe Devero, where open woodland leads to snowy peaks and small mountain hamlets.

Stay in a welcoming agriturismo and explore on skis from the doorstep, with a private itinerary shaped around your experience and the kind of trip you enjoy.

Quiet Italian valleys, welcoming mountain stays and ski touring from the doorstep.

A quieter corner of
the Italian Alps

Alpe Devero combines beautiful touring terrain with the warmth of a traditional Italian mountain stay.

We discovered Alpe Devero in March 2022 and immediately wanted to return. Not far from the Simplon Pass, this quiet corner of Piedmont feels a step back in time: small hamlets, open woodland and peaks in every direction.

The tiny hamlet of Crampiolo is reached on touring skis, around 45 minutes above the roadhead at Alpe Devero. We can arrange snowmobile transport for overnight bags, subject to local availability, so you arrive with just your day pack.

A lovely starting point is six days away: arrive and skin up to your accommodation, enjoy four days of ski touring, then ski back down for departure. Stay longer or keep it shorter; this is an a la carte trip built around your group.

Tour from the door,
return to a warm welcome

Each day begins in open woodland before climbing towards the slopes and peaks above.

Typical tours involve around 600–1,000 metres of ascent, or two to four hours on skins, before skiing back through the woods. There are routes in several directions, giving your guide options to suit the weather, snow and your experience.

The family-run agriturismo that inspired this trip serves delicious local food, with produce from its own animals and vegetable gardens, farmed in a traditional, sustainable way. A warm dinner together is as much a part of the stay as the skiing; we confirm your accommodation when planning.

When conditions suit, the small lift area at Alpe Devero can add an off-piste day to the mix. Touring remains at the heart of the journey, with flexibility to enjoy the best opportunities.

Is Alpe Devero
the right trip for me?

Alpe Devero can work well for skiers developing their touring skills as well as more experienced tourers looking for a quiet mountain break.

You should be comfortable skiing off-piste in variable snow and have the fitness for uphill travel. We discuss your experience before choosing routes and a pace that suit your group.

Days can range from gentler woodland tours to more ambitious objectives above the valley. Conditions and the group’s abilities guide the choice, so the itinerary stays flexible.

A personal trip, with room to progress, explore and enjoy being in the mountains.

Good food and a welcoming place to stay.

Your proposal can combine four days of guiding, five nights in an agriturismo and all breakfasts and dinners, or a different balance to suit your time. We set out every inclusion before you book.

Travel to and from Alpe Devero, insurance, equipment hire, lunches, drinks and ski passes are discussed separately. Reach the valley by car, or travel from Milan by train to Domodossola with an onward local connection to Alpe Devero; we confirm practical connections in your joining information.

Flexible mountain plans

Let the conditions guide the day.

February and March are a good starting point for planning, drawing on the winter programme and our March visit. These are recommended months, not fixed departures; your guide will advise on timing and routes for the snow cover and your ambitions.

We send a full kit list with your joining instructions and talk through equipment hire, luggage transport and the meeting point. Tell us your preferred time of year and how you like to ski, and we will shape the stay around you.

We had a fantastic day out with Stefano. We were a group of mixed fitness but all keen to experience the off piste skiing Grimentz had to offer, and Stefano tailored our day superbly to ensure we were all having a good time. He found us some great snow and taught us lots while doing it! He was also great fun to be around, an absolute essential ☺️ I’d highly recommend skiing with Stefano and the team.

Stefano was great and we could some amazing powder even though the conditions made that hard. He also rescued me when I dislocated my shoulder. So important to have a guide that can sort things out in an accident.

Stefano was a great guide. Even in some pretty tough conditions he managed to make sure we had top quality morning in Zinal and Grimentz. Couldn’t recommend him enough!

Two fantastic days touring/off-piste with Stefano in the Val d'Anniviers in January, just after large snowfall. Always fun and informative, but also safe. In difficult conditions they delivered a couple of fantastic days touring and kept the fun going. Thank you Stefano.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ

You don’t need previous off-piste experience, but you should be a confident skier who is comfortable skiing all marked slopes in a ski resort. Your guide will adapt the terrain and pace to your ability, from your first experience in powder to more technical and challenging freeride lines.

No two freeride days are exactly the same. Your guide will consider the snow, weather, avalanche conditions, your skiing level and your goals before choosing the best terrain for the day. Depending on conditions, this might mean lift-accessed powder, short ski tours, longer backcountry routes or a combination of them.

Yes. Avalanche safety equipment — transceiver, shovel and probe — is required for all our freeride days. We also recommend ski touring equipment, as it gives us greater flexibility to access the best terrain and snow conditions. An avalanche airbag backpack is also highly recommended.

Yes. Our days can range from lift-accessed freeride with minimal walking to ski touring and longer backcountry adventures. Touring equipment gives us access to considerably more terrain and allows us to search for the best snow away from the main ski areas.

Absolutely. If you are already a confident piste skier, your first freeride experience can be a great introduction to skiing beyond the marked slopes. Your guide will select appropriate terrain and introduce you progressively to off-piste technique, terrain awareness and mountain safety.

Yes. We create personalised multi-day freeride and ski touring trips in Valais, across the Alps and internationally. Trips can be designed around a specific destination or built around the type of terrain and experience you are looking for.

Our home bases are Val d’Anniviers and Saas-Fee in Valais, Switzerland, where we offer private freeride guiding throughout the winter. We also organise multi-day trips across the Alps and personalised freeride and ski touring adventures in destinations around the world.

Conditions come first. Our guides use their local knowledge, weather and snow information, avalanche conditions and your skiing ability to decide where the best options are each day. Being flexible allows us to make the most of the mountains while keeping safety at the heart of every decision.
